Sewing foundations are the essential techniques and skills that form the basis of all sewing projects, whether by hand or with a sewing machine. Students will learn how to sew by hand, including how to properly sew on buttons and hem garments, and learn how to skillfully use a sewing machine, including how to wind a bobbin, thread and change needles, and how to sew straight seams with proper seam allowance. Students will be taught how to finish and press seams, how to accurately read designs and patterns, and how to cut fabric according to pattern. Students will also be taught how to use key sewing tools, such as fabric scissors, pins, a tape measure and ruler, a rotary cutter, and a sewing machine with its many settings. Mastering these sewing fundamentals enables students to create functional and decorative items like tote bags, pillowcases, aprons, and pajamas that students will sew on their sewing machine. Students will enjoy the many creative, exciting sewing projects they will tackle as they practice and master the foundations of sewing!

The art of sewing extends beyond basic utility, blending creativity and self-expression as students learn to craft additional beautiful items, such as quilts and pieces of clothing. Sewing encompasses a wide range of techniques—from embroidery and quilting to making custom clothing and creating unique home decor. Learning about different fabrics and their uses will also be taught in this engaging, hands-on class. The resurgence of sewing reflects a growing desire to embrace handmade craftsmanship and to foster a deeper connection to the items we use and wear daily. Students will learn to sew with confidence, make garment repairs, and learn how to create new garments from scratch as they develop a love for sewing while gaining important and beneficial lifelong skills.
