Art History from a Christian Perspective

Course Description:

Process/Purpose: This course introduces students to major periods and works of art while viewing them through a Christian worldview. Students will explore how art has been used throughout history to express faith, tell biblical stories, and reflect God’s creation. From early Christian symbols to medieval church art, Renaissance masterpieces, and later movements, students will learn how artists responded to their culture, beliefs, and the world around them.

The class emphasizes understanding art as a form of communication and worship not just decoration. Students will discuss how Christian beliefs influenced artists and how art has shaped the way people understand Scripture, history, and morality. Lessons will avoid inappropriate content and focus on works that reflect biblical themes, craftsmanship, and purpose. Students will have the opportunity for occasional hands-on projects related to the artists and techniques being studied. By the end of the course, students will gain a basic understanding of art history, develop visual analysis skills, and learn to appreciate creativity as a gift from God that can be used to honor Him and serve others.
